The History of the Tarot

A brief history of Tarot.

Though there are many that believe that some of the the symbolism on Tarot cards dates back to Ancient Egypt and that they contain symbolism from astrology, the Kabbalah, ancient India and the I Ching,  the first recorded use of the tarot was in 15th century Italy (the tarocchi). By the late 18th century, people started using tarot decks for divination, and developed into the tarot we see today.

The tarot consists of 78 cards; 22 Major Arcana cards and 56 Minor Arcana cards. The Major Arcana represent the souls journey through life.

The Minor Arcana cards are divided into 4 suits; wands, cups, swords and pentacles, each containing 14 cards – 4 court cards and 10 numbered cards (pips).  The wands represent fire – passion, creativity and drive in a reading. The cups represent water –  love and emotional issues. Swords represent air – thoughts, mental activity, communication and clarity. Pentacles represent earth – physical matters, possessions and wealth. They are drawn and read by the reader in a pattern (a spread). The most common being the Celtic cross. Below I have a game for your entertainment, a typical 3 card spread, past, present and future. I hope you enjoy it.
